In situ assessment of the timber structure of an 18th century building in Madrid, Spain

The timber structural members of a seven-story building from the end 18th century were evaluated following procedure based on previous research works. structure consisted timber-framed brick walls and heavy floors with mortar filling. Non-destructive measurements taken in 13 sampling areas framed walls. Detailed at least 3 pieces each sample (stress wave Time-of-Flight probing tests). Mean density modulus elasticity values characteristic bending compression strength estimated. On-site load tests carried out three floor slabs to deduce their actual stiffness compare it estimation by NDT. They behaved more rigidly than expected, which is explained screed stiffness, transverse effect possible semi-rigid connection behaviour supports. Structural verification determined required critical this estimated strengths, showing correct safety level.
